Kicking off the summer...

  • Jun. 11th, 2008 at 12:14 AM

We had a great weekend! Saturday was a kind of chill-out day; we mostly just hung out at the house and went to Cold Stone Creamery. School isn't officially out until June 13th, but Becca's last day was Friday and Lauren's was today. She had the option of also having Friday as her last day, but there was a 7th grade pool party, and then today her band was performing, and she didn't want to miss either event.

I think it's ridiculous that school drags on until mid-June and then starts back up at the end of August. Especially since they're not doing anything but parties and busy-work. There should be no school from Memorial Day to Labor Day. The summer is short enough without the school system stealing more of it from us.

Anyway...

Sunday we went strawberry picking at a local farm. The strawberries were mostly small, but very sweet. We've already finished one box - I made strawberry shortcakes last night that were so yummy.

Sunday night was Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, with Steve Winwood opening. God, what an awesome concert. I was so disappointed that Steve Winwood didn't sing "Gimme Some Lovin'" from back in his Spencer Davis days (my very favorite Winwood song), but he still sounded great. But then later on he joined Tom Petty and the band on stage and they did a KICK ASS version of that song that brought everyone to their feet. It made the entire night for me.

Tom Petty sounded so good. There wasn't a song I didn't enjoy. And he looked like he was having so much fun, it carried into the audience. Chris said it was the best concert so far - even better than McCartney! I wouldn't go that far, but it was awesome. I think with McCartney, it's more emotional and magical for me. He and the Beatles have always been in my life and their music can always lift my spirits and it just gets into my soul.

I think Becca looks like she's filming a cereal commercial in this picture:

We were pretty far back at the concert. We had no problem seeing and hearing, but taking pictures didn't work so well. Still, I'm happy with these:

Steve Winwood (I had no idea he played guitar; I thought he was a keyboard player only):

Thankfully there was a screen so we could actually SEE what was going on down on the stage!

Great pictures. Your concert photos turned out very well. Thank goodness you didn't agree with your husband about Paul.
