It's OK - I'm with the Band

  • Mar. 14th, 2009 at 12:36 AM

It's funny - Lauren doesn't want me volunteering anywhere near the middle school. I had the audacity to walk by her math class last week when I was helping out with the book fair. The look of horror on her face was priceless.

But when it comes to field trips, she always wants me to go. I don't know why, but I definitely like to go when I can.

This past Thursday was the middle school band adjudication, where all the middle school bands are judged on performance and sight-reading. Since there are 40 kids in the 7th and 8th grades bands (the 6th graders don't take part in this), the teacher needs a few parent chaperones to keep the kids corralled.

Since we had to leave the school around 8:20, I decided to just let Lauren sleep in a bit and miss the bus since she usually has to be at school at 8:00. I figured being late wouldn't be a big deal. I stopped at McD's for some coffee, and we got to the school around 8:10. As she was signing in on a late-arrival log, the secretary asked why she was late, so I explained we were going on the band trip. Then Miss Lauren pipes up "But we would've gotten here earlier if Mom hadn't stopped at McDonald's!" Nice.

I really didn't do much chaperoning. Apparently, I was wanted for my storage space:

A very nice looking group! You'd never know they were giggling and messing around shortly before:

We stopped at the same McDonald's I stopped at for coffee earlier in the day. It's a tiny one, and we pretty much overtook the restaurant. The best thing about driving separately from the bus was being able to park and hit the restroom before all the girls crammed in there. That, and being able to listen to the radio, drink my coffee and not be surrounded by noisy kids!

Apparently, the band scored a "2", which is very good. Four would be the worst. Go BMS!

I got a laugh out of how Lauren "put you on blast" in front of the secretary. Maybe you should pay her back by walking in her math class instead of just passing by. :-)

Band
Hi,

Welcome to the beginning of band. High school competitions in marching band will take you to places you never knew existed and some you wish had remained unknown! The long car rides and even longer nights, not to mention the billions of hours of practice, but I wouldn't trade those 3 yrs of chaos for all the money in the world. I think us parents had as much of a blast as the kids--maybe more in some cases. I can look back 10 yrs now and realize that the dark circles under my eyes have almost cleared up from that frantic late hour and all hour pace. Not to mention all the extra daughters I seemed to inherit during band season which ran from Aug-Nov. I never knew how many were sleeping in the basement on any given night until I counted heads at about 2 or 3AM. Even the dogs snuggled into the girls' sleeping bags with them after the girls fell asleep and were perfectly content to stay there until their designated sleep mate woke up. Most nights were wall to wall bodies that then had to be transported to school the next morning in my hatchback. What a pitiful sight we made as they literally fell out of every opening in the car.
